2.2 MASSAO AND FAMILY TREE NURSERY:

2.2.1 
Introduction:

Massao and family work for enhancing biodiversity conservation through effective tree nursery production systems. The family also explore on species selection and management to attract local community to establish their own nursery and tree planting for earnign cash and conserve enviroment.

2.2.2 
Family participation at Jua Kali/ Nguvu kazi Show.

The UNDP - GEF East African Crossborder Biodiversity Project / TAF offered a complement to the family to exhibit tree nursery stocks including soil mixture, seedlings and seeds to the show.

The tree seedlings exhibited were for timber, shade, live fence, fodder, medicine Fruits ornamental, conservation, fuel and poles.

During the show a number of other seedlings were displayed including;

(i) Ornamental; Roses, and Hibiscus species.
(ii) Shade/ fuel; Senna siamea and Cordia abysinica.
(iii) Fruit; Perses americana and citrus species.

2.2.3
The Nursery Stock and Sales:

Nursey stock of about 20,000 seedlings per year are sold to individuals, NGOs, Schools and institutions at very reasonable prices. the seedlings are raised from cuttings, seeds and grafted materials. Animal manure ( Cattle, goat and poultry) is sole nursery soil mixture that cost only labour for collecting from the animal shed to the nursery potting shed.

2.2.4
Other Services

The family offers services such as delivery of tree seedlings and nursery soil mixture at a reasonable cost, advice on forestry and agro forestry matters, and landscaping.

Also the family provide consultancy in training in Forestry, Agroforstry, Enviromental Conservation, natural resources Assesment, Curriculum development and other development work related to socio- economic studies and biodiversity conservation.
